Kyle Hammons is a photographer and writer who travels the globe in search of vivid imagery and compelling stories that capture the essence of the places he visits. His work is born out of a lifelong love of nature and fascination with the world around him. When he is not bouncing around the world on ramshackle buses, overcrowded trains, or on the back of a rickshaw, you can find him in Evergreen, Colorado eagerly planning his next adventure.
Born in Louisiana, Kyle developed an appreciation of nature during family trips out west and he moved to Colorado after high school to pursue his interest in outdoor sports and recreation. It was during that time that Kyle developed a keen interest in photography and began photographing the natural world during backpacking trips throughout the canyon lands of Southern Utah and rugged peaks of Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. Seasonal jobs at ski resorts and national parks afforded Kyle the opportunity to travel across the United States while spending summers and winters working in places like Grand Teton, Glacier, and Denali National Parks.
Having traveled extensively across the Lower 48, Kyle’s thirst for adventure and discovery carried him to the Hawaiian Islands where in 2001 he landed with only a backpack, camera, and a journal. With no itinerary or plans and armed with only a gracious smile and a wealth of enthusiasm, Kyle hitchhiked across the islands of Hawaii, Kauai, Maui, Molokai, and Oahu. The following year, he traveled to Alaska and continued to hitchhike across the Kenai Peninsula and Interior Alaska. It was an adventurous period during which he discovered the joys of traveling and the rewards that come when we challenge ourselves and step outside our comfort zones.
In 2003, Kyle arrived in the Fiji Islands on his first journey abroad. Though he planned to stay only a few days, his life would be forever changed when he picked up a local woman and her grandson hitchhiking on the roadside. They invited him to stay in their home and for several weeks Kyle experienced the true meaning of generosity and hospitality while living in a traditional Fijian village. It was an unforgettable experience which taught him that the greatest rewards of traveling come not just from the places we visit, but also from the people we meet along the way. Though he had come only for the adventure, Kyle discovered a way of life that would open his heart and mind to the world around him and lay the groundwork for a lifetime to follow.
Specializing in landscape and travel photography, Kyle has spent the past ten years traveling extensively across Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania. By employing artistic and journalistic methods, he works to capture stories and images which will help us to better understand and appreciate the vast array of people and places that make this world so unique. Kyle is especially interested in a wide range of conservation and humanitarian issues and much of his work is focused around bringing greater awareness to these subjects.
Kyle’s writing and photography have been featured in books, magazines, advertisements, catalogs, and exhibitions, both in the United States and abroad. His extensive collection of stock photography from locations worldwide is represented by Tandem Stills+Motion and his photographs are featured as corporate art at a number of businesses, as well as many private collections. Also, Kyle offers private photography workshops, licenses and sells images through his website, and is available for freelance assignments.
